Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

April 2014

April 30th – 7:00pm – A beautiful night down at the beaver dams and a great night for seeing beavers. After waiting for a while and thinking they weren’t coming out, the parade of beavers began. There was one adult and two yearlings seen at the primary dam while one yearling and an adult beaver were at the secondary dam. During the evening we saw two adult beavers at once at the secondary. One finally went over and swam downstream. All three yearlings (kits) were seen altogether also. Five beavers for sure were seen along with one pond turtle and a duck with seven newborn ducklings following her and crossing over the secondary dam.HP, JR, CR, LB

April 24th – 4:45am – A big beaver with lots of food was seen ducking into the bank above the secondary dam followed by one of the yearlings. Soon the yearling went to work on the secondary dam, which is looking good. JR

April 23rd – 7:30pm – Four beavers were seen at the secondary dam. One of them was an adult and the others were the three yearlings. Two of which are medium size and the other is the littlest one. JO

April 23rd – 4:45am – The biggest yearling was seen getting something to eat near the area where the fennel grows. He then swam up stream. A smaller yearling was seen gathering vegetation and stuffing it in the secondary dam. Besides the vegetation, he was getting mud and placing it in the dam. Soon the smallest yearling came out and was repeating the same things the other beaver was doing. JR

April 20th – 7:00pm – A yearling was seen near the secondary dam. One adult was feeding by the Marina Vista bridge and soon a kit came out to greet the adult. Later two kits were seen on the secondary dam. It was a good beaver night for viewing and also for the fish that were seen jumping.HP, JR

April 18th – 7:45pm – After wondering if we were going to see any beavers, a yearling finally came out from above the primary dam. Soon after, Mom was seen with a second yearling and they went up stream to the annex area to feed along the banks. There were quite a few people out watching them. A Double-crested Cormorant was also seen fishing in the creek. CR

April13th – 7:00pm – 8:00pm – One adult beaver was seen working on the primary dam. That dam is looking great. Two yearlings went over the primary dam and swam down to the secondary dam, where they were whining and competing for treats that some one had left on the dam. Mom was seen swimming down to the yearlings, where there was more whining. She started to do some mudding on the dam and the yearlings joined in for a short time. They were seen bringing handfuls of mud to the dam.HP, JR, JO

April 9th – 4:45am – One kit was seen collecting grass in the annex area. It went back under the bridge pushing a big load of grass, heading for the dam. Another kit was then seen swimming back under the bridge. There seemed to be lots of splashing and general beaver busy noises. JR
