Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

July 2012

July 29th – 7:00pm-9:00pm – A lot of beaver activity this evening. Through out the viewing time, 4 beavers were seen. The new kit was out at least three times near the secondary dam. Dad and another beaver were seen below the secondary dam as well as the beaver we call Reed. He is always the one beaver that loves to build with the near by reeds thus his name. HP, JR

July 25th – 5:45am – Oh, what a morning for bird sightings. Five Green herons, two night herons, one great egret, and one kingfisher were seen. The kingfisher was diving under the bridge looking for fish. Two otters were also out fishing. While all of this was going on, one beaver was out mudding on the secondary dam.HP,JR

July 21st – 7:30pm-9:00pm – A beautiful night to be out beaver watching. Too bad it took the beavers a long time to finally make their appearance. One beaver came out and floated around near the secondary dam before going onto the dam. Another beaver was spotted coming from upstream down to the bank lodge. The baby beaver hadn’t made an appearance yet and watchers were packing up to go when the kit was spotted swimming around near the secondary dam. Since it was dusk the picture takers were disappointed. The baby went up on the dam and found something good to eat and then swam off towards home.HP, JR, JO, LB, MS

July 21st – 4:30am – A early beaver watcher reported that 2 beavers and baby were out , the baby swam fast up to the left willow then returned to the secondary where a beaver was muddin. the beavers were side by side and I thought “junior is getting a lesson”, but he pulled a large piece of the dam out and went to bed with his trophy. What a sight.JR

July 20tht 4:15am – One beaver was seen going into the bank lodge near the secondary dam. A night heron was seen on the primary dam. JR

July19th – 7:30pm-9:00pm – Very quiet beaver sighting night. One beaver came out and swam around near the secondary dam several times. Also seen was a beaver swimming up towards the willow tree and on up towards the bridge. No baby sightings before people left.HP, JR, LB, MS

July 18th – 7:30pn-9:00pm – It was reported that the baby beaver came out just before dusk. It swam around for a while near the secondary dam before crossing over. The kit then climbed up on the dam and poked around in a hole before climbing into it. After exploring the hole, it came out and came back over the dam. Three other beaver sightings were also reported.HP, JR

July 17th – 7:30pm-9:00pm – Beaver watches were out tonight and it took a long time before they were rewarded with a sighting of any beavers. A family from Hercules came over the footbridge and joined in and soon one beaver came out from the bank lodge and swam upstream towards the willow tree. They were very excited to see a beaver as they thought they were only in Alaska. Later just before dark, a beaver came out near the secondary dam and the baby beaver also made an appearance. He swam for a short while near the secondary dam and then took a big dive into the water and that was the end of our sightings.HP, JR, LB

July 15th – am – One beaver was spotted near the bank lodge by the footbridge. For any bird watchers out there, early morning at the creek is a good time to see some neat birds. One great egret was seen plus one green heron. To top things off, two kingfishers were also spotted.HP,JR

July 14th – am – A very busy beaver was filmed doing some mudding on the secondary dam.HP,JR

July 13th – 6:30pm – Two otters were seen by the dam eating fish and soon a beaver was sighted chasing them away from the primary dam. The kit was seen out around 7:45pm.MS

July 11th – 7:30pm-9:30pm – A lot of beaver activity from three of the beavers. They were swimming up and down the creek most of the evening. Dad came up from way downstream and crossed over the secondary dam and headed for the bank lodge. The new kit didn’t make an appearance during the time we were at the dam site.HP,JR,LB,MS

July 8th – 7:30pm-9:00pm – After a successful Beaver Festival planning meeting, several members went down to the footbridge to see if we could see the new kit. Several beavers came out and spent time swimming around and checking out the area. After some time the new kit came out and swam near the bank near the lodge. He also went down to the secondary dam and was seen near the blackberry bushes and also up on the side of the dam. Joining use were several people who have never seen the beavers before . One young couple came all the way from San Jose, as they had heard about the beavers on the recent Channel 5 story of the new kit. They left very excited as they were able to see several large beavers and also the new kit. It was a very good beaver sighting evening.HP, JR, CR, LB, FB, MS

July 7th – 7:30pm – Two beavers were sighted and one went over the secondary dam and swam downstream. Also seen was an osprey and a night heron.HP,JR

July 5th – 4:30am – An adult beaver popped up near the footbridge and it was followed by the baby beaver. They swam together up towards the willow on the left side of the bank. The adult dove down and the baby swam back to the bank lodge. Another beaver showed up below the footbridge and went over the secondary dam. All the beavers looked calm and not traumatized from the fireworks the night before.JR, MS

July 4th – 7:30pm-9:00pm – Several Worth A Dam members gathered at the footbridge to over see the beavers while hundreds of people walked over the bridge to see the Fourth of July fireworks. The beavers must have sensed that something was going on as we only had a few sightings. The baby beaver came out of the bank lodge and dove down and swam upstream. Bubbles were seen coming back to the lodge later and maybe he decided there was just too much going on. Another beaver made an appearance a few times and that was it for the night. We left at 9:00pm just before the fireworks began.HP, JR, LB, JO

July 3rd – 7:30-9:00pm – It was a great beaver viewing night for those who came out to the dam sites. The baby beaver and a larger one were seen right before I got there at 7:30 and the larger beaver was getting the baby beaver to go over the primary dam. They went into the bank area near the dam. I didn’t have to wait too long before the baby beaver came out and crossed over the dam again and swam down towards the railroad bridge. It went into the bank lodge and didn’t come out again while I was there. From then on we would see at least three beavers going and coming up and down the creek. As we followed one back to the primary dam, we were lucky to see Dad go over the dam and stop on the dam for a while before swimming on. Boy has he gotten big. Reed came out and went to work on the secondary dam. He was changing sticks around and placing mud here and there. Several raccoons and muskrats were seen in the creek which added to the busy night. LB, JO,MS,and several other visitors.

July 2nd – 7:30pm-9:00pm – Worth A Dam members and several curious visitors gathered on the footbridge in anticipation of seeing the new beaver kit. One beaver was seen coming from the bank lodge and just swimming around very slowly checking things out. Another beaver appeared and was showing the same behavior by just floating on top of the water and also checking things out. One beaver made a few trips to the secondary dam and then went up towards the primary dam. Dad beaver appeared and came over and got some willow and dove down with willow in tow and disappeared .During our beaver watch, we were treated to seeing a very tiny muskrat swimming near the bank and later a larger muskrat came out of the bank and was chased away by one of the floating beavers. The new kit didn’t make an appearance by the time most people left at 9:00pm but all went home excited to see several beavers and some of the visitors hadn’t ever seen a beaver nor knew that they were in the creek.HP,JR,CR,LB,MS

July 1 – Kit seen near (and heard!) at bank hole near secondary dam.
