Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

August 2013

August 29th – 4:30am – One medium size beaver was seen heading home with a tulle.JR

August 28th – 7:00pm-8:30pm – Since the kit has been seen coming down from upstream lately, several beavers watchers went to check out the primary dam. Soon the kit came out from somewhere near the old lodge and swam around for a while before going over the dam and then swimming on down towards the secondary dam. He spent most of the evening swimming between the secondary dam and on up towards the Marina Vista bridge. He came out onto the secondary dam several times. A couple, who came from Walnut Creek with their delightful four year old daughter, were not disappointed as the kit was out when they arrived and continued to entertain all of us for the rest of the evening. I had a wonderful conversation with the little girl and she was very knowledgeable about the beavers and nature and we both shared information. We all followed the kit back to the primary dam where he crossed over and went to the annex area. Another beaver was sighted near the secondary dam when the kit returned again to that dam. I would say the little guy sure got a lot of exercise going back and forward as we all did . CR, JO, LB

August 28th – early morning – A large beaver was seen coming under the tiled bridge and swimming towards the primary dam, while pulling a large treat along with him.JR

August 22nd – 7:00pm-8:30pm – Beaver watchers were only treated to a sighting of the young kit tonight. He/she came swimming down from way upstream around 7:30. The kit continued to swim back and forth around the secondary dam. Once in a while he would swim and disappear near the bank lodges. He did come out again and swam straight to the dam and got out onto the dam to get some fennel, which he took back to the bank lodge. CR, JO, LB, MS

August 19th – evening – The young kit was out swimming around the creek area by the secondary dam. An adult beaver was seen swimming from upstream and then crossing over the primary dam. He continued on down to one of the bank holes near the footbridge.HP, JR

August 15th – 7:30 – When we got down folks had just seen two young otters going over and around the pond. Maybe because of this there were no beaver sightings for a long time. Then an adult came down from the primary dam and swam into the new chamber where mom, dad, & kit are living. Soon afterwards the kit emerged and swam about getting willow that had been ‘stashed’ under the water! HP JR

August 14th – 7:00pm-8:30pm – Two beavers came out near the secondary dam and did what we call the floaty thing as they just float on the top of the water as they check things out. Soon the kit came out and the beaver watchers were treated to some great baby beaver sights.HP, JR, Glenn & Karen

August 12th – early morning – Three beavers were out and about this morning. Dad was seen along with the kit and Reed. All were down by the secondary dam. A mom raccoon with her baby was spotted crossing the dam. A night heron was out also. .HP,JR

August 8th – 8:00pm – The kit was seen out with one of the beavers and it looked like it could have been Dad. The large beaver went over the secondary dam and down stream. The kit remained on the footbridge side of the dam. HP, JR

August 7th – 7:15pm – Dad seen heading from living quarters, kit out by the footbridge and then it went over the secondary dam looking for things to eat. Lately there has been a nest of bees right by the overlook at the secondary dam so do be careful if you go down to check out the beavers.HP, JR

August 6th – 7:30pm-8:30pm – During the evening, one beaver came out and floated around for some time before going across the creek. Soon the baby beaver came out and we were able to watch him/her swimming and diving around for a while. He/she took some small pieces of branches and then dove under and went under the over hang of the berry bushes. While the baby was away, one of the beavers came out and did the floating thing and then checked the secondary dam before swimming off with some treats. The baby beaver came out again and just floated around so we could get some good pictures. It was a great evening for baby beaver sightings.HP, JR, JO, LB, MS
